Meet Victory: Betsy Benner

Meet Betsy Benner, our Human Resources Administrator. Betsy works closely with the Victory management team to help identify and cultivate the Victory company culture and find the employees who help to keep that identity strong. The hiring process starts with Betsy. It’s her job to find the people who exhibit Victory values and the the ones who can make good beer. In addition, she handles payroll and benefits and all of the day-to-day HR tasks that help employees get happily through each day of work.

Q: How long have you worked here at Victory?
A: 4.5 years

Q: What is the coolest thing about your job? And the worst?
A: The best is definitely the awesome people that I work with and for. Honestly, the only negative I have is that I didn’t start working here a long time ago.

Q: What was the worst job you ever had?
A: I once had a boss who wouldn’t take the time to get all the facts. He would come ripping into my office yelling and screaming. I’d try to clarify what was going on in order to get my job done, but the yelling and screaming made it a tough work environment.

Q: Tell me something about yourself that no one would know just by looking at you.
A: I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’m a closet Glee fan. I love that show. I’ve also been teaching aerobics for 25 years. That’s not quite as embarrassing.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Why?
A: A teacher. I like to tell people what to do.

Q: What do you miss most about being a kid?
A: Not much. Everything just keeps getting better.

Q: If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
A: With it being an election year, I would like to witness a time when the democratic and republican parties work in peace and harmony and get something done for the betterment of the country.

Q: Finish this sentence: Beer is…
A: something I have come to appreciate so much more since working at Victory.

Q: What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?
A: Paradise by Coldplay.

Q: What is your favorite line to quote from a movie?
A: I don’t really find myself quoting from movies like most of my co-workers, but one of my favorite lines is from It’s a Wonderful Life when George says to Clarence: “Well, you look about the kind of angel I’d get. Sort of a fallen angel, aren’t you?”

Q: What is your favorite Victory beer and food pairing?
A: Golden Monkey followed by Baltic Thunder. Then everything tastes good.

Q: If you knew the world was ending in 2012, what would you do differently?
A: I would go to all the places on my bucket list with the people I love.

Q: Someone is making a movie about your life, and it starts filming tomorrow. Who should be cast as you and who should be cast as your love interest?
A: Reese Witherspoon (with brown hair) and Matthew McConaughey.

The Victory Brewing Story

The story of Victory Brewing Company starts on a school bus in 1973 when fifth-graders Ron Barchet and Bill Covaleski stepped aboard, on their way to a new school. The two became fast friends and remained so, even as they grew up and went to college on opposite coasts. Just months out of college, Bill’s appreciation of good beer and access to his father’s home brewing equipment inspired him to explore the hobby. That same year (1985), Bill gave Ron a home brewing kit as a Christmas gift. With that, both Bill and Ron developed their love of the craft…
